An open letter to CNet and Gamespot’s Management
Dear Sirs,
Whilst I am not a regular user of Gamespot (and a former regular of Gamefaqs), I am shocked and appauled at the sudden firing of a veteran editor, and like much of the rabid shambling mass of gamers out there on the internet calling for blood, I wish to have my opinion on this subject heard.
I’ve watched as CNet bought out and gutted most of the most useful sites on the internet, tearing apart their signature styles and filling them with computer-crippling flash ads, and I did very little. I complained slightly at the TV.com buyout, but since then, I’ve just let the shambling corporate presence suck the life out of useful internet utilities, and turn them into gigantic feature-laden billboards. Sure, you need to make money, after all, it’s good to make money, but with any journalism, integrity is the most important thing in the world, and the site’s recent actions against the journalistic integrity of the staff, all in aid of advertising revenue, are not suitable in the slightest.
So as a heavily concerned individual, not only for the quality of Gamespot’s reviews, but for the continued employment of your now terrified staff, and the remaining shred of integrity of gaming journalism in general, I wish to let the company know that I’m as mad as hell, and I’m not going to take it anyore. For the forseeable future, I plan to completely boycott all CNet websites and products. Attatched is an image of my hosts file, blocking all traffic between my home computer, and CNet’s entertainment services. While I shall miss Metacritic and GameRankings more than Download.com and CNet, I’m sure that RottenTomatoes shall appreciate the increased traffic.
