The Golden Compass Movie

This movie was a pretty good movie. As a movie. If you ignore the book it was based on completely.

They completely tore all of the intrigue and mystery that was in the book out of the movie. In the first five minutes. Yes, they started it with an opening monologue that was Lord of the Rings ripoff-y which revealed more than you would find out after reading half the book. The movie then jumps into nonstop action mode, where there is no pause to let you think about what just happened in the story and what the repercussions may have been.
They then proceeded to deal with delicate and confusing subjects that were slowly revealed during the book with short, awkward monologues. They inflated Daniel Craig’s role to include an action scene. Nicole Kidman was a poor Mr’s Coulter, sending up red flags when she was supposed to be entirely charming, and becoming emotional and caring when she was supposed to be a cold bitch. This of course has a part to do with their murdering of the story.
The CGI was good, but really not believable. Anyone who read the book will tell you the art direction was all wrong when they see what was supposed to be an old black and white projector has become a laser gun which shoots color footage. The scene where Lyra rides Iorek looks like a Coca~Cola commercial.

And then they brutally murdered the ending because they wanted a happy ending.

2 stars out of five. READ THE BOOK FIRST, I BEG YOU.

P.S. The most redeemable parts of the movie are Lee Scoresby and Iorek, and Iorek’s big fight.
