The Golden Compass Movie
This movie was a pretty good movie. As a movie. If you ignore the book it was based on completely.
They completely tore all of the intrigue and mystery that was in the book out of the movie. In the first five minutes. Yes, they started it with an opening monologue that was Lord of the Rings ripoff-y which revealed more than you would find out after reading half the book. The movie then jumps into nonstop action mode, where there is no pause to let you think about what just happened in the story and what the repercussions may have been. Read more
1 commentSocks’ Movie Reviews: Beowulf
Robert Zumeckis sure knows how to make a movie. Not a good movie, not a bad movie, but simply a movie. If there was ever another movie like Beowulf that was the complete epitome of average, well, I don’t know, I’ve probably seen it and completely forgotten about it by now. That being said, I’m fairly confident that Beowulf is not a movie that will be remembered in half a year, nine months tops. If you want to know my it’s so mediocre, then be my guest and read on. Otherwise, you can overlook the rest of this review just as much as you can overlook this movie.

Anyone who has seen Ong Bak knows that Tony Jaa kicks marvelous ass on the big screen. Anybody who’s able to throw a kick after doing a double somersault without the use of wires or CGI definately deserves a “Oh… My… God…” when watching. So when I had heard that Tony Jaa had another movie out, I had to give it a looking at.

Socks’ Movie Reviews: American Gangster
Every once in a while, a movie comes along that’s just pure entertainment, movies like Pulp Fiction and Trainspotting. On November 2nd, 2007, another one was released, going by a rather catchy title, American Gangster. This movie isn’t moving, it isn’t emotional. This movie is all about just plain entertainment. If you haven’t already seen the bootleg, then you may not need this review. However, this isn’t stopping me from contributing to this blog!

Here is a link to the trailer for the movie on youtube. From the trailer alone you might imagine that the movie is a Narnia-esque adventure. DO NOT LET THIS FOOL YOU. The movie has nothing to do with that. In fact, you see just about every second of CGI from the movie in that trailer.
First I shall detail all the pros of this movie. It has high production values, and excellent acting. It has some very good character development. It is also a well-written (sort of), very emotional movie. It has some pretty good dialog and a nice pretty message by the end, which is a pro because the entire movie works towards this message instead of throwing it in your face during the last couple minutes. Mark Wahlberg is a ‘Payne’ in the ass
Yes, I know that was a horrible pun.
It was recently announced the Mark Wahlberg is going to portray the badass know only as Max Payne in the upcoming movie based on the Rockstar games.

I never watched any of the Saw movies before. My friends swear the first two are awesome. I could care less. I saw Saw IV yesterday more as a spontaneous impulse than some flick I’ve been murdering to see. I didn’t know what to expect, but saying that would imply that I put some thought into anticipating something special out of this. My low expectations, though, did give me some way to be entertained, then.
